No less than 64 individuals lost their lives in a police operation cracking down on the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's history.

Four police officers were among those killed during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. Over 80 people were arrested.

Violent conflicts broke out when about 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho countered with armed resistance, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives confirmed.

The International human rights organization stated it felt "horrified" by the police operation, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Mission Consequences

The informal settlements close to Rio's airport is regarded as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.

Local authorities stated at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Dozens of people were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Locals have described the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the raid started.
