Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen others were hurt in an apparently deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion took place as officers and emergency crews approached the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for three siblings who were older adults.

All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals got detained at the site and one more individual who fled after the blast was located shortly later. The trio have been transported to hospital.

The explosion could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the location showed the property turned into a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The president of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the property was facing an removal notice due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the home. When the police arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the residents triggered the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Commander Papagno informed news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also found at the site, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the explosion included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of national police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The prosecutor thought the detonation had occurred on a floor above the access point and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to Italian media, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the three officers who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
